Forskolin is actually a compound present in Coleus forskohlii, a tropical plant within the mint family. The plant is native to India, and grows wild in numerous countries in Southeast Asia. It’s been used since ancient times to treat asthma, bronchitis, constipation, heart problems along with other conditions. However, it became much more well known in 2014 after Dr. Oz praised it as a “miracle” weight loss pill.
Forskolin comes as an over the counter supplement usually containing 10-20% forskolin extract (often called pure forskolin). How Is Forskolin Meant to Work? Forskolin continues to be studied as a potential weight reduction supplement due to the way it affects fat cells. In laboratory studies, forskolin causes fat cells to generate more cAMP (cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate), a chemical messenger that leads to the breakdown of fat tissue. Since forskolin causes the breakdown of fat cells in a lab, it’s believed to perform the same in humans. That still remains unproven, however. Summary: Lab studies show that forskolin causes breakdown of fat tissue. It’s still unknown whether or not it has the same effect in your body.
Does Forskolin Cause Weight-loss? Does Forskolin Cause Weight Loss?Even though forskolin does cause fat tissue to breakdown, that doesn’t really mean it will result in weight-loss. Only two small reports have looked at whether forskolin causes weight reduction in humans. In a clinical trial of 15 obese men, one group was given 500 mg of 10% forskolin extract on a daily basis. After 12 weeks, your body fat percentages from the men taking forskolin decreased significantly – from around 35% to 31% – in comparison to those given a placebo. At the same time, lean body weight in males taking forskolin increased by about 5%. However, while fat mass declined and lean body weight increased, total body weight failed to change.
Interestingly, the group taking forskolin also saw their testosterone levels increase, which may cause decreases in unwanted fat. Scientific study has not examined how or if forskolin could cause testosterone levels to increase though. The other study found no influence on weight or unwanted fat in 19 overweight women using the same dosage of forskolin.
Summary: Almost no reports have been done on forskolin and weight loss. One small study found it decreased body fat and increased lean body weight in men, however with no overall weight change. Another study on women found no effect on weight or body composition.
Does Forskolin Prevent Weight Gain? Does Forskolin Prevent Weight Gain?Although forskolin will not seem to cause weight-loss, it may prevent putting on weight. In the second study cited above, overweight ladies who took forskolin gained less weight during the period of 12 weeks compared to those given a placebo. However, the differences were small. The average weight of women taking forskolin stayed approximately the same, while the average weight from the control group increased slightly (1.3 kg). The women failed to report any change in appetite. A study in rats also suggested that forskolin may prevent excess weight.
Researchers purposefully overfed rats therefore they would gain weight. The rats were separated into two groups – one received forskolin extract throughout the overfeeding period, the other failed to. The ones that received forskolin gained considerably less weight compared to other group – about 75% less. Furthermore, they ate less food along with their levels of cholesterol improved significantly. While both of these research has revealed promising results, a lot more research is required to determine whether forskolin extract can prevent excess weight in humans. Summary: Two small studies have learned that forskolin may help prevent putting on weight. Far more research is needed to confirm this impact on humans.
The 2 studies of forskolin and weight in humans did not find any negative health consequences. Cholesterol, insulin and blood pressure levels were not affected, with no significant negative effects were reported. In those studies, 100-250 ml of any 10% forskolin extract was utilized twice daily for 12 weeks. The results of employing a higher dosage or using it for an extended time are unknown.
One half of the nearly 1,300 reviews are 5 stars. Some people claimed to have achieved significant weight reduction, even within the first to 2 weeks of taking. Other positive effects reported include: normalized bowel movements, decreased msvkiq and increased energy. Many reported weight reduction alongside diet or exercise (not simply from your pill itself).
Some individuals saw no improvement in weight or all around health. Others experienced negative effects like diarrhea, bloating, gas, and constipation. Several noted its contraindication using their blood pressure levels medication.
